Voices of Tomorrow
Professional performances in a safe space for young jazz musicians
For emerging musicians between 9- and 18-years-old, the gap between school performances and mainstream concerts can be daunting.
To help bridge the gap, lead jazz singer, educator and artistic director Ingrid James, developed Voices of Tomorrow in collaboration with Brisbane Jazz Club. The initiative is a transitional community pathway between school, music academies and the industry. We mentor students to take their place on the stage and they, in turn share their learning with each other.
“…it ‘wowed’ the full house of patrons…”
This was not an amateur night, it was a demonstration of the brilliant young talent out there in the community and it “wowed” the full house of patrons who had come to listen.
…Some of the vocal and instrument playing was at an amazingly mature level and the ‘jam’ session at the end showed the ability of these young performers to blend beautifully in delivering an ‘ad hoc’ finale.
What a show!

How it works
- Singers perform two songs accompanied by an experienced professional jazz trio.
- Instrumentalists enjoy playing live with professional musicians in a fun night of jazz repertoire.
And whenever we can, we jump at the chance to jam together at the end.
School-aged participants fast-track to top-level performance
The program branched out from the longstanding Jazz Singers’ Jam Night. We work with music teachers and parents to meet several needs:
- A safe space for young performers to practice their vocal and instrumental skills.
- An opportunity to perform in a professional environment.
- An invitation to perform in front of a public audience that is warm and supportive.
- A place of shared learning experiences with like-minded artists from other schools.
